Angels in Adoption

Attorney Heather Strickland is honored to be recognized as a 2017 Angel in Adoption by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI). Congresswoman Martha McSally will recognize Heather for her contributions to adoption and child welfare at the CCAI’s 2017 Luncheon on Sept. 26, 2017, in Washington, D.C.

“I am so fortunate to love my work,” Heather says. “To be recognized for my contributions to my community is incredibly humbling.”

In 2016, Heather and the MyersStrickland team handled the adoptions of nearly 600 foster children — in addition to serving many more brave birth mothers and adoptive parents pursuing private adoptions in Arizona. On Nov. 20, 2016, when the Pima County Juvenile Court celebrated National Adoption Day, Heather completed 70 adoptions, uniting 109 local foster children with long-awaited, permanent families.

This tireless commitment is nothing new for Heather; she and her family have a long history of dedicated service to their community. Her husband, Major Kevin T. Maskell, served 15 years on active duty in the United States Air Force.  Kevin left active duty this summer, and entered the Arizona Air National Guard to ensure the family remained in Tucson — all for the sake of Heather’s career and the local children and families she serves.

“I have a passion for helping others through challenging times and crafting creative solutions for families and children,” Heather says. “Our communities are strengthened when children are connected with the adults they are meant to be with. A sense of belonging is the very essence of family.”

It is this kind of dedication to building families and to the Arizona community that earned Heather recognition by the CCAI’s Angels in Adoption Program, which honors individuals and organizations for their extraordinary contributions to adoption, permanency and child welfare. Each year, recipients of the award travel to Washington, D.C., to celebrate their hard work and to participate in special events to effect change on behalf of children in need of permanent homes. The program also draws media attention to raise public awareness about the positive difference adoption makes in the lives of children.
